GONZAGA UNIVERSITY   MARCH 25    7:00 PM

         Dave Denniston, a championship college swimmer paralyzed from the waist-down in a 2005 snow-sledding accident, will share his inspiring story of courage in becoming a Paralympics swimmer, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 25 at Gonzaga University’s Cataldo Hall Globe Room.

          Denniston’s lecture is titled “Mind Over Body” and is free and open to the public. Earlier March 25, Denniston will take part in a swimming exhibition with Gonzaga senior Nate Higgins, also a physically disabled swimmer, at 1 p.m. in the Rudolf Fitness Center Pool.

 The events are sponsored by the Gonzaga Student Body Association (GSBA), the GU office of mission: intercultural relations and the University’s disability resources education & access management office (DREAM).

 Denniston’s “Mind Over Body” program is a unique motivational strategy that Denniston created to help people move toward their goals, despite any barriers that might exist. It is the same philosophy that motivated this former NCAA national champion to go from the hospital bed to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

 Denniston has touched countless lives by sharing his story with universities, athletic organizations, and corporations and has inspired them to believe in themselves and what they can achieve. Faced with adversity, Denniston continuously proves that the mind is more powerful than the body.

 His key message points include the following:

  • Applying a positive attitude to everyday life;
  • Setting and achieving goal-oriented results;
  • Developing your character for life;
  • Sharing his paralympic experiences;
  • Overcoming personal and professional obstacles.
